Kathy, I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I purchased your book, “Just In Case” at our homeschool convention and have enjoyed it very much. It has been my resource along with your blog. I would like to ask you a question or two…1. I have been holding off purchasing rolled oats, but after your latest blog, you made it look so simple, but I don’t have a food processor, but I do have a vitamix which I think will do the trick, what do you think and how should I store these rolled oats (inexpensively). Also, I live in the twin cities in Minnesota and don’t know how to get in contact with other people like us that are preparing their families, any ideas?
Thank you so much
Hi Kimberly. I’m so glad you found us! The Vitamix should work just fine but the oats are just as they are. I wonder if what you mean is oat groats. Those can be flaked to make oatmeal. I store my rolled oats in 6 gallon buckets with a couple of oxygen abosorber packets added. For long term storage the oats should be treated with diamotaceous earth or with dry ice to keep the bugs at bay. Oats don’t have the storage capacity of wheat but I have had some for well over a year without problems. Oats are one of those things that I go rotate through pretty quickly. If you google minnesota preppers you should find a state wide organization. Otherwise your homeschooling friends are a good place to start.
